Page 1 of 6 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” Revelation 22:20 The Lord Jesus Christ last message to the church universal (the mystical body of Christ) is “Surely I come quickly”. The Lord Jesus Christ did not lie and therefore the promise of His soon coming is an unbreakable promise. He made this promise in either late 95 or early 96 AD. It was recorded in Scripture by the Apostle John for the benefit of every believer from that date until His return.
This promise was given by “The Son” who is the eternal person of the Lord Jesus Christ. He made this promise as the God-Man in His hypostatic eternal glorified human resurrection body. John was caught up to the third heaven (cf. Rev. 4:1-2) to see the divine revelation of things to come (cf. Rev.1:19c with 4:3-22:21). He had already been instructed on things he had seen (cf. Rev. 1:19a with vv 4-20), and things which were occurring in the church age and would continue until Christ return (cf. Rev. 1:19b with 2:1-3:22). Christ actually made the promise four different times in His last prophetic message which He sent to every believer (cf. Rev. 3:11; 22:7, 12, 20). You will notice that the promise is actually given three times in the closing fifteen verses of the book. That fact alone should cause us all to pause and consider the importance of this prophetic promise.

Peter wants us to understand some facts related to return of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit had led the Apostle Peter to warn us that “in the last days” men who walk after the lust trends of their natures of corruption (i.e. old sin natures) would mock the idea that the Lord Jesus Christ is coming again.
They would claim that history of man has continued without major changes down through the ages. Peter then testifies that these men are willfully ignorant of creation history. They are ignorant about true history because they have rejected the truth of the Word of God. The modern evolutionist is a perfect example of men who mock the Biblical truth of divine creation, the beginning of human history, and previous divine judgments (in the dispensation of Angels-cf. Gen. 1:2 with Jer. 4:23-26; Isa. 24:1; 45:18 and in the dispensation of the Gentiles-cf. Gen. 6:1-7:24). Since they have rejected the divine revelation which explained past history, they also reject the divine revelation which concerns the future destruction of the temporal earth and the entire temporal universe (cf. II Pet. 3:10-12).
To deny the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ is to call Him a liar! Any attempt to deny the literal second coming of Christ, no matter what theological system they may use is an attack on the veracity of the Son of God. Their false doctrine should immediately alert believers to the fact that this person is ignorant of the teachings of the Word of God. |
